Chunghwa Telecom to Expand Wi-Fi Network Deployment

Chunghwa Telecom said on December 7, 2010 that the company plans to invest NT$3 billion (US$99.3 million; US$1=NT$30.2) in 2011 to expand its Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) network deployment in Taiwan, according to the Commercial Times of Taiwan. Chunghwa Telecom aims to invest a total of NT$10 billion (US$331.1 million) in setting up approximately 30,000 hotspots in the next three to five years in Taiwan. The company also plans to provide its household ADSL (Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line) subscribers with wireless Wi-Fi service by charging a flat rate of less than NT$100 (US$9.9) per month. Equipment that Chunghwa Telecom is projected to purchase includes ATU-R (ADSL Transceiver Unit-Remote), backbone networks, and network management systems. It is reported that Chunghwa Telecom has already purchased more than 10,000 units of Wi-Fi-supported home gateways from D-Link.
